The best fishing spots

El Banco

El Banco is one of the main fishing sites in the Banderas Bay area. Located approximately 43 miles northwest of La Cruz. The bank is an area where the structure of the seabed meets the surface and is in the migratory path of yellowfin tuna. The trip to El Banco is approximately two hours, but many fishermen say it is worth the trip, as here you will find a variety of world class trophy level fish. Not just tuna, the bank also houses blue and black marlin in the 400 pound range and some claim the range is up to 1,000 pounds.

Maybe one of these greats will be yours to drink. This is not the only great variety of fish in the El Banco area – you’ll also find Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, Jack Crevalie, Snapper and more. If you are looking for a challenge, a trophy, bragging rights and a chance to catch the catch of your life, then El Banco is a place not to be missed.

La Corbeteña (La Piedra)

La Corbeteña is a world famous fishing destination as fantastic. La Corbeteña is an underwater mountain surrounded by acres of smaller tuna and other “bait fish” for the largest fish that will challenge any fisherman. They say the largest and best trophy fish can be found in La Corbeteña and the black marlin in this area can reach up to 1,000 pounds.

Blue marlin complements black marlin in a similar pound range. But La Corbeteña does not stop there, you will also find yellowfin tuna of similar weights. Imagine fighting 400 pounds, the reel reels, the bar bends, and in some cases, may even splinter. Welcome to Corbeteña, where you will find almost any variety of fish you want in sizes that are sure to challenge even the most experienced fisherman.

El morro

Located just to the north end of Banderas Bay, this group of rock pinnacles is excellent fishing. Barnacle-covered rocks attract tuna up to 50 pounds, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and more. Although this area is not the trophy’s destination, it is close enough to be efficiently attacked by pangas and smaller ships. It also provides a good action on seasonal migrants and resident fish. The proximity is similar to the Marietas islands, so it is common for boats to visit one or both areas, on a given day, depending on where the fish bite.

Sport Fishing

Offshore Fishing

Offshore boat fishing, sometimes called deep water or open water, is fishing in deep water (over 30 meters) and at some distance from land. It’s dangerous compared to shallow water or fishing in the lake. More knowledge about weather patterns, navigation and safety precautions is needed,
and this is not an activity for beginners.

Inshore Fishing

Inshore fishing is fishing from a boat within sight of the land and in waters less than 30 meters deep. The baits are similar to those used for beach and rock fishing except that they are often larger since larger fish are the targets. The species will include all beach species.
